Currently too few scientists study sleep disorders and too few health care professionals are trained to diagnose and treat sleep problems to meet the needs created by this underappreciated health problem, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. Between 50 million and 70 million Americans struggle with chronic sleep disorders, which cost the nation hundreds of billions of dollars every year in medical expenses, lost productivity, accidents, and other costs.
Sleep Medicine is now a recognized subspecialty within internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, otolaryngology, psychiatry and neurology in the United States.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) defines a Physician Sleep Specialist as follows:
“A physician who is a sleep specialist is certified in the subspecialty of sleep medicine and specializes in the clinical assessment, physiologic testing, diagnosis, management and prevention of sleep and circadian rhythm disorders. Sleep specialists treat patients of any age and use multidisciplinary approaches. Disorders managed by sleep specialists include, but are not limited to, sleep related breathing disorders, insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, parasomnias and sleep related movement disorders.”
According to MDSalaries, sleep medicine specialists make anywhere from $200,000 to $300,000 a year.
The environment for sleep medicine is typically office based, with sleep studies completed in a sleep lab. A sleep lab has a number of beds set up to allow for patients to be monitored and recorded while sleeping. The patient spends the night in the room while being connected to equipment which measures breathing function, heart rate, and motion. Other symptoms such as snoring, talking, and sleep-walking are also observed and recorded in a sleep lab. (Andrea Santiago, about.com)
It was known for centuries that sleep could affect such disorders as epilepsy and asthma. According to the American Board of Sleep Medicine, the discovery of REM sleep, sleep apnea, and that sleep disorders could have serious medical consequences led to the development of clinics and laboratories in the 1970s devoted to the study of sleep and sleep disorders.
Sleep medicine continues to be one of the most growth-oriented segments of healthcare today. More and more clinical research dollars are being dedicated to sleep research in the effort to better understand sleep disorders and their effects on the human body. All major indicators expect the sleep market to grow upwards of 18% year over year.
Positions in the specialty discipline of sleep medicine are readily available across the United States and around the world. The problem for most physicians is finding the time to explore the options available. Making cold calls to acquaintances or co-workers and sifting through the various ads in journals and on the internet can be very time-consuming. Alternatively, if you are relocating, you may not have any familiarity with hospitals and medical groups or community offerings in a new area. In this case, time and distance can be a problem if you’re using the conventional approaches to finding a job.
