Recent research by the National Institute of Mental Health indicates that 26% of the adult population in the U.S. suffers from some diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. Nearly 6% of all Americans suffer from severe mental illness (i.e., schizophrenia or bipolar disorder).
Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses including mental, addictive and emotional disorders. Mental illnesses, including addictions, are common. Like other medical illnesses, mental illnesses range from severe and life-threatening disorders, to relatively mild and self-limiting conditions.
Psychiatry is one of the oldest medical specialties. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is over 150 years old. Psychiatry is also one of the frontiers of medicine, as researchers constantly make new discoveries about the brain. Recent advances in the neurosciences have led to significant new technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of many mental illnesses. Among other innovations, brain imaging and new pharmaceuticals have led to mental illness treatments that are just as effective as treatments in other medical specialties.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, there are approximately 39,000 psychiatrists and another 6,000 child psychiatrists for a total of 45,000, making psychiatry the fourth largest medical specialty. The number of qualified U.S. Medical Graduates selecting psychiatry residencies is insufficient to fill all of the positions. The annual salary for psychiatrists ranges from $168,251 to $248,195.
The growing demand for psychiatry jobs points to a looming shortage in the profession, Merritt, Hawkins & Associates reported in its 2005 study on recruitment trends. The number of search assignments for psychiatry rose from 54 in 2003–2004 to 80 assignments in 2004–2005. That steady increase underscores a possible “silent shortage” of mental health professionals, the national recruiting firm reported. “It’s easy to sweep psychiatric patients under the rug because they aren’t dying on the street of heart attacks or other physical problems,” said Jim Merritt, the firm’s president, in a statement. “There is a huge need for psychiatric services that is going unfilled.”
The prospects for finding a good job in this field are excellent for the foreseeable future. There is still a great need for psychiatrists in all aspects of the public, as well as in the private care sector. Psychiatry was designated as a shortage specialty and a priority specialty in a recent report by the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee. Subspecialists such as child psychiatrists and geriatric psychiatrists are in even greater demand.
Positions in the specialty discipline of psychiatry are readily available across the United States and around the world. The problem for most physicians is finding the time to explore the options available. Making cold calls to acquaintances or co-workers and sifting through the various ads in journals and on the internet can be very time-consuming. Alternatively, if you are relocating, you may not have any familiarity with hospitals and medical groups or community offerings in a new area. In this case, time and distance can be a problem if you’re using the conventional approaches to finding a job.
At eMatchPhysicians.com, we offer a simple option—you can view Psychiatry Job Matches and explore our database of physician job opportunities. Your privacy will always be protected, and you have the opportunity to make your profile as visible or as private as you’d like it to be. You can submit a request for further information based on jobs that interest you set up phone appointments and interviews, and more.
