After their initial training in internal medicine, surgery, or anethesiology, intensivists become board-certified by completing additional training focused in critical care (www.sccm.org). In the process, they become familiar with the complications that can occur in the ICU and thus are better equipped to minimize errors.
Mortality rates are significantly lower in hospitals with closed ICUs managed exclusively by board-certified intensivists. Apart from saving lives, intensivist model ICUs may also reduce ICU lengths of stay and the number of unnecessary ICU admissions. Dr. Peter Pronovost, an intensivist at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, studied hospital mortality rates after abdominal aneurysm repair (a complex, high risk procedure) in Maryland. Surgical mortality was 21% in hospitals without intensivist model ICUs, vs. 7% in hospitals with them. After adjusting for other variables, patients at hospitals without intensivist model ICUs remained three times as likely to die with surgery. John Birkmeyer, MD, a surgeon and health services researcher at Dartmouth Medical School, estimates that at least 50,000 lives could be saved each year (in metropolitan areas alone) if intensivist model ICUs were in place across the US.
Intensivists earn between $100,000-$200,000 a year.
Positions in the specialty discipline of critical care intensivists are readily available across the United States and around the world. The problem for most critical care physicians or critical care intensivists is finding the time to explore the options available. Making cold calls to acquaintances or co-workers and sifting through the various ads in journals and on the internet can be very time-consuming. Alternatively, if you are relocating, you may not have any familiarity with hospitals and medical groups or community offerings in a new area. In this case, time and distance can be a problem if you’re using the conventional approaches to finding a job.
At eMatchPhysicians.com, we offer a simple option—you can view Critical Care Job Matches and explore our database of critical care intensivist job opportunities.
