What Electronic Health Records Mean for Your Organization

Posted on: Wednesday, March 11, 2009

The Obama administration has promised a good deal of money to modernize the record-keeping capabilities of health organization nationwide. While the money to do it is welcomed, migrating medical records to electronic format is a massive undertaking that will require a good deal of manpower to complete efficiently. As of 2006, less than 10% of medical organizations actually kept electronic medical records. While that number has probably gone up a little by 2009, it’s going to take a whole lot of effort to get to the 100% that the President is shooting for. So – how do we get there as organizations?

The first step is to secure some of the funding that is coming down the pipe from the recent stimulus package. Without that funding, there just isn’t a way in most tightly squeezed HMO and private practice budgets to adequately perform the task. The two best organizations to contact are the Electronic Health Records Association (EHR Association) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Both lobbied extensively on the stimulus package and both will have information for you both on how to secure the funding and what to look for in personnel to hire once the funding to pay their salaries has been locked down.

The pros of electronic health records are all too obvious. A patients entire chart will be available to any doctor or specialist at a glance, a functionality that is critical in emergency care situations and preferable in all others. EHR’s will also clean up the billing process and encourage leaner operational efficiency which will translate into less administrative costs. There is bound to be a lineup for these funds so the sooner your organization can queue up, the better.
