Plastic Surgery Careers
Posted on: Monday, January 19, 2009
Plastic surgeons are some of the most highly trained physicians in the medical field. People often get cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons confused. Plastic surgeons spend a lot more time learning reconstructive surgery than a cosmetic surgeon. They deal primarily with reconstructive surgeries of all parts of the body, but may choose to specialize further in craniofacial surgery or surgery of the hand, both of which are considered more complex than other plastic surgeries.
A plastic surgeon will generally spend up to five years of general surgery training, followed by up to three years of residency in plastic surgery. The annual salary for plastic surgeons ranges widely from $185,000 to $453,000 and is dependent largely on years of experience and additional specializations.
Plastic surgery can also be one of the more rewarding medical professions. Reconstructive surgery can bring intense joy and relief to the patients that need it – this is almost reason enough to go into the profession. While all surgeons require fine motor skills and a dedication to the advancement of their craft, plastic surgeons need to constantly be learning in order to stay ahead of the curve and in demand. There are several professional associations for plastic surgeons, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Foundation for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.
Plastic surgeons must be able to cooperate with all other surgical disciplines, as they will often be called in to assist with other types of surgery. They are expected to be able to reconstruct any area of the body. Burns, hand injuries, leg trauma, and injuries to the face are the most common cases in which plastic surgeons are involved. Plastic surgery is often less about form, as you would think it is, and more about function. Major tumor removals are just one example of an operation in which a plastic surgeon may be called upon to reconstruct an area to be functional again.
Due to the call for cosmetic surgeons, many plastic surgeons often undertake further training in this area. The procedures that they are called upon to do for cosmetic surgery are minor when compared to what they are trained to do in plastic surgery. Regardless, there is such a high demand for cosmetic surgery that many choose to go into it and do very well. Those who do choose to devote themselves to reconstructive surgery, however, will find very rewarding employment opportunities and do very well financially.
